The difference between a crypto wallet and an exchange account becomes most important when something goes wrong. A password can sometimes be reset. A lost self-custody recovery phrase may present a very different problem.
Before comparing transaction fees or convenience, establish who controls the credentials that authorise movement of the assets. That answer helps explain the responsibilities you retain and the provider risks you accept.
A wallet is an access tool
Crypto assets are recorded on a blockchain. A wallet provides a way to interact with accounts and authorise transactions; it does not hold coins in the way a physical purse holds cash. In conventional self-custody arrangements, control of private keys is central to access.
Wallet designs differ. Some introduce account recovery or shared signing arrangements. Read the specific design rather than assuming every application labelled “wallet” gives the user the same control.
An exchange account adds a provider relationship
A custodial exchange typically controls the keys associated with customer holdings. You access its service through an account and request trades or withdrawals under its terms.
The US SEC’s investor education bulletin warns that a third-party custodian’s hacking, closure or bankruptcy can interrupt access or put holdings at risk. That is an educational warning, not a statement that US investor protections apply to every platform or country.
| Question | Self-custody arrangement | Custodial exchange account |
|---|---|---|
| Who normally authorises blockchain transfers? | The holder of the relevant signing credentials | The provider operating the custody system |
| What can fail? | Recovery, device security, transaction judgement | Provider systems, withdrawal access, account security |
| What must be checked? | Recovery method and supported networks | Custody terms, withdrawals and provider identity |
Hot and cold describe another distinction
An internet-connected wallet is commonly described as hot. Cold storage keeps signing credentials offline under its particular design. These labels concern exposure; they do not by themselves establish who has custody.
A hardware device cannot judge whether a recipient is honest. Signing a harmful approval or sending to the wrong network can still create losses. Treat the transaction displayed for approval as a decision requiring attention.
Questions to ask before moving funds
Check the asset and network, withdrawal restrictions, minimums, fees and recovery arrangements. Confirm the recipient through a trusted channel. Where appropriate, a small test transfer can reveal an address or network mistake before a larger transfer, although it does not establish that a service is trustworthy.
Never give a recovery phrase to someone claiming to provide support. Keep backups away from shared email, public cloud folders and screenshots that other applications can access.
Frequently asked questions
Is self-custody always safer?
No. It changes the risk and places more operational responsibility on the user. Security skills and recovery arrangements matter.
Does an exchange balance equal a bank deposit?
Do not assume so. The legal claim, asset treatment and available protection depend on the provider and jurisdiction.
